Lois has a dream: to be an astronaut. With her fantastic maths and physics grades you would think she would be encouraged in this ambition, but the adults in her life cannot see beyond her weight and encourage her to seek a career closer to terra firma. When Lois takes to drastic measures in an attempt to become someone she’s not, she meets Amelie, Stannah and Justine, three girls who also struggle with accepting themselves.
3:15 PM | SAINT FRANCES
At the start of the summer, Bridget has an abortion just as she lands a much-needed job in an affluent Chicago suburb – nannying a six-year old.
With no time to recover, she clashes with the obstinate Frances and struggles to navigate a growing tension between Frances’ moms.
As her personal relationships suffer, a reluctant friendship with Frances emerges, and Bridget contends with the inevitable joys and shit-shows of becoming a part of someone else’s family.
6 PM | GO BACK TO CHINA
After spoiled rich girl Sasha Li blows through half of her trust fund, she is cut off by her father and forced to go back to China and work for the family toy business. Through her journey, she gets a much needed dose of reality check and comes to term with her estranged family. A bittersweet portrait of a fractured family, the film also offers an honest look at the human cost of things that are made in China.
10:15 PM | FIRST LOVE
The film is the prolific auteur, Takashi Miike, at his most fun and anarchic, a noir-tinged yakuza film blending genres in the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo.
