Dear friends of Wichita Orpheum Theatre,

What a week it has been. We cannot begin to fathom the thought of losing this crown jewel in downtown Wichita, the 102 year-old historic Orpheum Theatre, that has been beloved by generations of Wichitans. It turns out the community feels the same way. We are full of gratitude and thanks for your concern and outpouring of support when the theatre was threatened by a fire that was ablaze from flammable roofing materials on First Street last Thursday.

To begin, no one was hurt or injured, and ultimately that is the best news. I was in the office building when the fire was set, unaware. One brave individual riding by on a bicycle noticed something suspicious, saw the fire, and called for help. That individual also flagged down a couple driving by. In my view, it was because of these three that the Orpheum Theatre did not succumb to any major damage. Whoever you are, thank you so much.

Enter the heroes. Because of the swift and dedicated efforts of the Wichita Fire Department, that thought of losing the theatre remained just a thought and not reality. In a blazing fire, one minute or one misstep can make a difference, so timing and efficiency is critical, and our city's finest stepped up to the plate and took care of business.

Good Samaritans, skilled and talented first responders, and dedicated fire fighters saved a part of Wichita’s heartbeat. In an interesting way, for a day or two following the fire, it felt like the Orpheum was wrapped in a special bubble. If a building could smile, I do believe Lady O was basking in the love of Wichita.

The minor damage incurred to our lobby concessions windows can be replaced, but we lost a very special item, the "Opening Act" mural by John Pirtle that was installed to celebrate the Orpheum Theatre's 100th anniversary in 2022. We send our thanks and appreciation to John for this incredible work of art that has graced the theatre’s south wall, and brought life and a story to those who see it. This mural was also made possible with a grant from The Arts Council and an in-kind donation from City Blue Print. We will keep you posted on our plans for that space in the future.

Due to confusion from different reporting outlets, we want to correct a major detail—the AT&T Building to the South of us is doing roof work. They closed First Street from Broadway to Topeka to allow for a crane to access the roof and the materials that were to be installed is what was set on fire. The materials and construction are not a part of the Orpheum Theatre.

We are moving full steam ahead for our interior restoration and will close our doors at the end of May for approximately one year. Stay tuned to our socials where we will keep you informed and engaged all year with activity and updates.

Until then, come see us at our many shows that we have coming up through May! We look forward to seeing you.

On with the show,

UPDATE: There’s no sign of damage that would prevent this weekend's events from happening as scheduled, so we fully expect the shows to go on. Should anything change, we will update ticket buyers via email, update our website, and post on our socials. We are overwhelmed by the support the community has shown since the incident occurred last night.♥️

Thank you to the community for your concern about the fire that broke out near the Orpheum Theatre this evening. Fortunately, thanks to the quick response of Wichita Fire Department, the situation was contained before it caused any major damage to our building or our neighbors along First Street.
